Cleveland County students take a trip to the CATS bus garage

05.10.2017

Four Cleveland County High School students (Josh McGinnis, Jason Atkins, Andrew Kirkpatrick, and Tyanna Sloan) visited Charlotte on May 4th for a day of learning at the Charlotte Area Transit (CATS) bus garage. For most students this was their first experience with public transit. They were able to explore busses that were temporarily out of service, how to pay fare, communicate with the driver, and use the pull cord to request a stop. The students were also able to ride on a bus and experience the time point announcements, which inform riders of their location along the route and is essential for visually impaired passengers.MAB’s Orientation and Mobility Specialist, Heather Couch, goes out into the field every day to instruct blind or visually impaired individuals with safe and effective travel through their environment so this was a great exercise for the students and their teachers who were also present. We want to send a big THANK YOU to CATS, the students and teachers of Cleveland County and Heather Couch! This was a great experience!
